Our own Dr. Azza Al-Ani, one of our specialist orthodontists here at Shakespeare Orthodontics in Auckland, recently shed light on the complex relationship between genetics and dental health in an interview with Seven Sharp. Azza was representing the New Zealand Orthodontic Association (NZAO) at the request of One News.

While dental hygiene plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health, Azza emphasised that genetics also play a significant part.

“Genes have been found to be influential in things like tooth development, how many teeth we have, and whether they’re present or not. In enamel and dentine strength — those are the structures that make up the crown of the tooth,”

She went on to explain that genes can influence various aspects of dental health, including tooth development, number of teeth, enamel and dentine strength, saliva composition, and jaw size and position. Additionally, genetic markers have been linked to susceptibility to periodontal disease and tooth decay.

Dr. Al-Ani also discussed specific genetic conditions that can affect dental health, such as amelogenesis and dentinogenesis imperfecta. These conditions can impact the quality, quantity, and structure of teeth.

For individuals with a family history of dental problems, Azza recommends seeking professional advice from a dental healthcare provider. Early detection and preventative measures can help mitigate the potential negative effects of genetic predispositions.

While genetics may influence dental health, she stressed the importance of maintaining excellent oral hygiene practices. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are essential for everyone, regardless of their genetic makeup.

“I think the most important thing is to be more rigorous. Everyone needs to have excellent oral hygiene practices in place. Everyone needs to brush twice a day, floss daily, and see their dentist on an annual basis at least,”

At Shakespeare Orthodontics in Auckland, our entire team are dedicated to providing comprehensive orthodontic care and personalised treatment plans.

By understanding the genetic factors that influence dental health, we can offer tailored advice and interventions to help patients achieve optimal oral health.
